Sinus Lifts
You may need sinus lift surgery before getting dental implants if your jaw isn’t strong enough to hold the implants in place. In a sinus lift, your dentist adds bone to your upper back jaw, located near your sinuses. A sinus lift uses bone grafts to strengthen and increase the size of your jawbone if you have experienced bone loss.
Before your sinus lift, your dentist at Glen Burnie Dental Group will take X-rays to examine the anatomy of your jaw and sinuses. During the surgery, your dentist will cut a small opening in the bone and fill the space underneath with bone graft material. Your jawbone will be allowed to heal for four to 12 months before your dental implants are placed, giving the added bone time to connect with the existing bone. Sinus lift surgery increases the likelihood that your dental implants will be installed successfully and will last a long time.
Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)
Platelet-rich fibrin, or PRF, is a treatment that can be combined with surgery such as a sinus lift to speed up healing. PRF involves using two compounds, platelets and fibrin, that are found naturally in your blood. Platelets are the component that makes your blood clot and form scabs, and fibrin is a protein that works with platelets to stop bleeding.
If your dentist decides that PRF would be beneficial for you, they will draw blood before your surgical procedure and extract the platelets and fibrin. After your surgery, the dentist will apply the PRF to the site of your surgery. Patients report faster healing, less pain, and fewer complications after using PRF, and since it comes from your own body, it’s extremely safe with no risk of negative reactions.
